Atlanta E-911 Center Reports Progress on Call Response and System Reliability
Recent operational updates show continued focus on faster emergency call handling and alternative contact options in Atlanta.
How we reported this

Atlanta has cut emergency call answer times in half since May 2024, with the average caller now waiting only 6.25 seconds before a dispatcher picks up. The City of Atlanta E-911 Communications Department has implemented changes that directly affect how quickly residents reach help during emergencies.
Response Time Improvements
The reductions in wait times build on earlier gains recorded in 2024. In that year the 911 center answered 84 percent of calls within 20 seconds, compared with 71 percent the year before. Officials set a target of reaching 95 percent of calls answered within 20 seconds by the end of 2026. These measured steps address the volume of calls that arrive daily at the communications center.
New Medical Dispatch Protocol
The City of Atlanta E-911 Communications Department launched a new Emergency Medical Dispatch protocol. The protocol aims to deliver a higher level of emergency care instructions to callers while they wait for responders. This change adds structured guidance during medical incidents and forms part of the department's ongoing adjustments to call handling.
Non-Emergency Call Management
About 60 percent of 911 calls in Atlanta are non-emergencies. Residents are urged to use ATL311 by dialing 311 or (404) 658-6666 for urgent but non-emergency incidents such as noise disturbances or car break-ins. Directing these calls away from the 911 line helps keep the primary emergency system available for time-critical situations.
System Status Following Outage
Atlanta's E-911 system is fully operational following a Verizon outage. Alternative contact options include a web portal and Text-to-911 for those unable to make calls. These backups remain available so that residents can still reach dispatchers when phone service is disrupted.
The City of Atlanta continues to direct residents to the appropriate channels based on the nature of their situation. Using ATL311 for non-emergency matters supports the goal of maintaining quick access for true emergencies through the 911 system.
