Atlanta High School Athletic Facilities Targeted for Upgrades

The Hank Aaron Diamonds initiative by the Atlanta Braves Foundation is upgrading baseball and softball fields at Atlanta Public Schools high schools including North Atlanta, Washington, Jackson and Mays with artificial turf infields.

Facility Improvements Underway

Work at these APS sites focuses on artificial turf infields to support baseball and softball programs. The upgrades target completion before the 2026 baseball season and form part of ongoing efforts to maintain venues used by student athletes across the district.

Atlanta Public Schools high schools participate in the Georgia High School Association and offer 22 sports that include football, baseball, basketball, girls flag football, lacrosse, riflery and E-Sports. These programs rely on fields, courts and other infrastructure that receive periodic attention to remain usable for regular competition and practice.

Eligibility Rules Shape Participation

APS students must pass five subjects in the previous semester, attend school during that semester and keep an annual medical physical examination on file using the GHSA form to compete. These requirements apply across the sports offered and help determine how many athletes use the available facilities each season.

Private schools in the Atlanta area also maintain extensive athletic programs. Blessed Trinity Catholic offers 26 sports, St. Pius X Catholic offers 60 sports and Holy Innocents Episcopal School offers 58 sports. Their venues and fields support these larger lineups and draw athletes from surrounding neighbourhoods.

Options for Home-Schooled Athletes

High school athletes in grades 9 through 12 who are home-schooled or lack access to a local program can join the Atlanta Track Club Youth Team for the full season. Those who already have local access may compete only in the postseason through the same team.
