Atlanta families turned out in force at Piedmont Park on July 10 for the opening of the new splash pad area, with attendance reaching 2,400 visitors by midday.
Summer break schedules and rising July temperatures have pushed more households toward organized daytime programs that combine outdoor play with indoor exhibits. City recreation staff noted an uptick in advance reservations compared with the same week in 2025, reflecting demand for activities that fit work schedules and avoid peak heat hours.
At Piedmont Park, the Midtown Green Market runs every Saturday through August with free kids' craft tables run by the Atlanta Parks Foundation. Families can also sign up for the weekly Junior Naturalist walks that start at the park's visitor center on 12th Street. A short drive south, Zoo Atlanta in Grant Park offers timed entry to its new elephant habitat expansion, where keepers lead 20-minute talks at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily.
Both sites report combined summer program registrations above 18,000 since Memorial Day, according to city and zoo figures released this week. Single-day parking at Piedmont Park costs $10 on weekends, while Zoo Atlanta adult tickets run $32.95 and child tickets $27.95 when purchased online.
Parents planning ahead should check the Atlanta Parks and Recreation website for Piedmont Park event cancellations due to weather and reserve Zoo Atlanta slots at least 48 hours in advance. The Center for Puppetry Arts in Midtown still has openings for its Saturday morning shows through the end of July at $18 per child.
