Atlanta Locals Escape to 5 Nearby Trails and Rivers This July
Atlanta locals are packing day packs for short drives to trails and rivers this July.
How we reported this

Atlanta residents spent the weekend of July 11 exploring river trails and city parks instead of longer road trips.
Global headlines on energy routes and distant storms have kept many people close to home this summer. Local families report choosing spots within an hour of downtown to avoid fuel costs and airport crowds.
Trails along the river
The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area at Powers Ferry Landing offers kayakers a 4-mile stretch of flat water with rental launches at the park office. Just north, the Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail connects to the Carter Center grounds and provides a paved 2.2-mile loop popular with runners before 9 a.m.
City records show 1.8 million visits to Atlanta parks during the first half of 2025. Parking at Powers Ferry costs $5 on weekdays and rises to $10 on Saturdays. Bike rentals along the BeltLine run $12 for two hours at the kiosk near Irwin Street.
Planning a weekday trip
Check the Atlanta Parks & Recreation website for trail closures before leaving. Arrive before 8 a.m. at either site to secure shaded parking and cooler temperatures on the water.
